CHARACTER
Name: Ryotaro Dojima
Canon: Persona 4: Arena Ultimax
Age: 42
Timeline: Post-Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality: Ryotaro Dojima is a detective at the Inaba PD, a job he takes very seriously, even going as far as abandoning his familial duties in favour of his work at the beginning of the game, especially if it is connected to the hit and run killing of his beloved wife, Chisato, that took place at least two years prior. It is the one case he cannot let go of, cannot stop investigating until he has solved it. It is an obsession. While he claims to do it for Nanako’s sake, it’s instead his way of running away. By burying himself in his work (and sometimes drinking more than he should) he can forget about his pain, while indulging in it, but also feels like he is doing something meaningful, something that will help both Nanako and him to cope with Chisato’s death, without realizing that it will not bring his wife back even should he solve the case in the end. Instead the way he constantly puts work first distances him from the only family he has left. As he admits later on, that’s because he is afraid of losing her, so he avoids getting close to her in the first place, holding her at arm’s length and failing to realize that he hurts her - and himself - that way. This makes him a coward, which he readily admits to, but also finds the resolve to change once he realizes that it’ll help him and Nanako to become a real family and find happiness.
While he loves Nanako dearly, he is unable to show it to her, since his wife used to take care of their daughter and he is not good with kids, generally. In the course of the game and with his nephew Yu’s help, however, he grows closer to her. He manages to keep promises he never could before, like reading her a bedtime story, which shows the gentle and caring side he so often hides behind a gruff demeanour. When it comes to the gifts he sometimes likes to bring home, knowing how much his daughter loves the department store Junes, he has weird tastes, which is shown when he buys a platypus shirt for Nanako and colourful swimming trunks for Yu.
In general, he is shown to be rather unsure as how to deal with children and teenagers, reverting to such generic conversational topics as school and friends, when talking to Yu at first. Later on, he uses interrogation-like speech with him, showing both that he is a detective with all of his being and also that he is very observant, noticing that Yu and his friends seem to make a lot of trips to the Junes food court and electronics department (which, unbeknownst to Dojima, serve as their special headquarters and entry to the TV world respectively). It is interesting to note that while he was suspicious of Yu’s actions for a long time, he never expresses a similar sentiment towards his partner Adachi, who turns out to be the culprit in the end. This means that while he is concerned about Yu from the beginning and grows to trust him, that process has already taken place with Adachi, marking their relationship as a special one. Like Yu (and Nanako), Adachi receives a coffee cup, marking him as a member of the Dojima family and representing the unshakable bond Dojima has with this small circle of people. A bond that won’t disappear even when he finds out that Adachi is the perpetrator behind the serial murders in Inaba. In fact, his first instinct is to make sure Adachi is treated well, displaying how he still cares for the man, regardless of what he has done. Following the events of Persona 4 and Adachi’s incarceration in a holding facility at the Police Station in a city nearby, Dojima tries to visit Adachi numerous times. He doesn’t give up even after being rejected, showing both how important his ex-partner is to him, even after his betrayal, and how tenacious Dojima is. Generally, it can be said that while he has a hard time talking about his feelings and opening up to someone, letting them in so to speak, once he does it’s proof of his trust in that person.
While he also gets angry at times, when he feels that Yu is not being open with him, for example, he quickly lets the issue drop when he sees that it worries Nanako. Even when it’s hard for him to do so, he wants her to have a warm and happy home, one he excludes himself from with his behaviour early on but later wants to be a part of, marked by the celebration of “becoming a family”. As he puts it himself, it’s a step necessary for him to move on from the binds of his tragic past he held on for too long, and instead look toward a happy future with his daughter. It’s because of this new-found resolve and his deep love for her that Nanako’s kidnapping leads to him recklessly chasing the kidnapper, Namatame, without waiting for backup, which leads to him being severely injured and ending up in hospital as well after a car crash. During the time he is there he uses every chance he gets to escape his own hospital bed and rush to Nanako’s bedside, not caring that his wounds may open and he could endanger his own life that way. Apart from being by her side and urging the doctors to do something to help her, he is unable to do anything for her and thus feeling like he failed her the way he failed Chisato.
The fact that he is a capable and observant cop who takes his job very seriously indeed is further shown when he confronts Yu about the threat letters he’s received. When his nephew tells him the truth about his involvement with the case, which includes entering the TV and rescuing kidnapping victims with a power called Persona, however, Dojima does not believe him as it does not fit in with his rational world view and his fact-based approach to solving cases. This is very understandable and matches Naoto Shirogane’s reaction to being told the truth without witnessing it herself, though. As Detective Kurosawa reports to Mitsuru Kirijo in Persona 4 Arena, Adachi filed a report about an interview with Namatame mentioning Personas and entering the TV, which Dojima must have read. Following Adachi’s matching testimonies after being arrested, which he is bound to have read considering his continued investment in his ex-partner, he does not call it into question or asks Adachi about it when they meet again at the end of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, which implies that he has accepted it as the truth, finally.
Background: at http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Ryotaro_Dojima and also http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Nanako_Dojima
Abilities: - Accomplished police detective, thus good at collecting evidence and knowledgeable concerning the law and its execution. Also good at shooting with the service revolver he carries.
- Good at making coffee.
- Rather fit for his age and capable of chasing criminals or others, despite being a smoker and occasional drinker.
- Generally a very regular human male in his early forties.
First Person:
[A gruff looking male’s face appears on the little screen, a cigarette between his lips. Despite just having arrived, Dojima looks like he has not slept in days, his eyes filled with both worry and irritation.]
This is a message to the local Police Department and anyone else who’s listening. I’m Detective Dojima, Inaba PD. I am not really interested in whoever thought of this elaborate joke or who’s responsible for kidnapping me. I just want one thing.
[He takes a deep breath. The worry in his eyes has shifted to something much angrier and most definitely with a kind of danger in them. This is not a joke, not to him and he wants this place to know that.]
Tell me where Nanako is.
[He pauses again, dropping his voice, adding a chilling tone to it.]
Tell me now.
[Dojima continues to glare at the camera for just a moment longer, before his expression softens, grows a little desperate even.]
Nanako, if you hear this. Wherever you are, Daddy's going to find you.
[With that the feed cuts of suddenly.]
Third Person: It had been another long day at the Inaba Police Department, filled with too much desk work and far too many cups of coffee. Dojima was relieved to finally drag himself home, feeling exhausted. Sadly, he could only pretend the stares of everyone weren't getting to him, could only act like he didn't care. They were talking about him constantly, always just out of earshot, around the corner or inside the kitchenette, cutting their conversation short as they saw him approach. So obvious, but it didn't make it any less painful. It had been months since the arrest, yet the things they said barely had changed at all.
Do you think he knew it was his partner all along? - How could he not have? That Adachi guy was practically glued to his ass, wasn't he? Or who knows, maybe he's just nearly as bad a cop as that serial murdering partner of his?
He shook his head as if to clear it while he was driving home, rubbing the back of his neck to relieve some of the tension that had been building up there. Deciding to focus on the good things in his life - the one good thing - he thought of Nanako's smiling face, singing along to the Junes jingle and pulled into the store's parking lot. Maybe he'd just get a little something for his daughter, along with the groceries he had been ordered to pick up. It would surely bring a smile to her face. Now that Yu was no longer living with them, he had to take on some of his nephew's duties, so that Nanako could concentrate on more important things, like her homework, in the evenings.
He entered the department store and headed straight to the Junes gifts section, hoping that once he was there a suitable present would stand out on its own. He sadly was as clueless as ever when it came to picking out gifts for the kids. With an audible sigh, a small part of him wondered whether he could ask one of the store's salespeople for help...
Just as he was looking around, trying to spot one of them, he blinked and suddenly wasn’t at Junes anymore. Instead, he was seated on a train, an old looking train that swayed ever so slightly as it travelled a track towards an unknown location. How had he gotten there? Where was he? His eyes widened, staring out at the unfamiliar scenery. He was sure he had just been at Junes a second before, looking at cute T-shirts and the Magical Detective Loveline merchandise that Nanako loved so much but already owned in its entirety.
The only thought on his mind was his daughter then, and he got up from his seat, dashing toward the door and outside just as the train pulled onto a run-down looking station. Ruby City. He was not even in Japan anymore, it seemed. Regardless he pulled out his mobile phone, wanting to call Nanako and tell her he would be back late – though he was not convinced he would be at all. Everything felt different and wrong in a way he couldn’t explain, but when the phone read No signal in huge letters, he wasn’t surprised. Instead, he sighed, a long way from giving up just yet, and after looking at the posters meant for newcomers, headed for the Police Station. If at all someone there would be able to explain what had happened to him and how he could go back home, back to Nanako. That was everything that mattered, after all.
